Nubric quiz concepts
Reading time: 4minReference for the concepts used to structure, configure, evaluate, share, and deliver quizzes in Nubric.
Summary
A quiz groups questions into an activity. Each question defines the task presented to the student, the answer configuration, and the associated feedback and scoring.
Question settings control additional behavior. Randomization and advanced logic support variations of a question, while sharing, assignment, and printing options determine how quiz content is made available.
Concepts
Quiz structure
Quizzes contain questions. Each question has a response type and its own content and configuration.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Quiz | A container that groups questions into an assessment activity. |
| Question | An assessment unit within a quiz, containing a problem and the configuration used to assess a student's response. |
| Question type | The response format of a question. It determines the available answer and evaluation settings. |
For instructions on organizing and managing quizzes in My Quizzes, see Manage quizzes in Nubric.
Question types
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Open Answer | Students enter their own response. Expected answers, scores, and evaluation options determine how the response is assessed. |
| Multiple Choice | Students select from predefined answer options. Each option has an associated score. |
Question components
Question content is organized into the statement, answer configuration, and feedback.
Statement
The statement presents the task that students must complete.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Statement | The problem or instructions shown to the student. It can include text, mathematical expressions, and references to variables or expressions. |
Answers
Answer configuration depends on the question type. Open Answer questions define the answers used to evaluate a student's response. Multiple Choice questions define the options shown to the student.
Answer configuration
| Question type | Answer configuration |
|---|---|
| Open Answer | One or more expected answers, each with its own evaluation options. Initial content can also be provided in the student's response field. |
| Multiple Choice | A set of selectable answers, including correct answers and incorrect alternatives, also called distractors. |
Scoring
Each configured answer has an associated score. In Open Answer questions, evaluation options determine whether a response matches an answer. In Multiple Choice questions, scoring depends on the selected options.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Score | The credit assigned to an answer. |
| Partial credit | A score that awards some, but not all, of the available credit. |
Feedback
Feedback provides explanations for the question as a whole or for a particular answer.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| General feedback | Explanatory content for the whole question, such as a worked solution or a description of the method. |
| Customized feedback | Explanatory content associated with a particular expected answer or answer option. |
For instructions on configuring question content, answers, and feedback, see Configure an Open Answer question in Nubric or Configure a Multiple Choice question in Nubric.
Answer evaluation
In Open Answer questions, Evaluation options determine how a student's response is compared with an expected answer. These options are organized into two blocks: Evaluation criteria and Answer settings.
| Block | Description |
|---|---|
| Evaluation criteria | Define the comparison method, including mathematical or literal equality, whether decimals are accepted, and the permitted margin of error. |
| Answer settings | Define additional requirements for the response, such as its mathematical form, list interpretation, or allowed units. |
Evaluation options are configured for each expected answer. Multiple Choice questions use the scores assigned to the selected options.
For the settings available in each block, see Evaluation options.
Question settings
Question settings contains additional configuration options for an individual question. These cover random variables, constants, functions, units of measure, unit prefixes, allowed constructions, and separator symbols. These settings control the mathematical elements and notation available in the question, as well as options used to generate variable content.
For a description of each setting and its available values, see Question settings.
Dynamic questions
Dynamic questions use generated values or expressions to produce variations of the same problem. The statement and expected answers can reference the generated content.
Randomization
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Random variable | A variable whose value is generated according to configured rules. It can be referenced in the statement, expressions, and expected answers. |
| Random expression | A mathematical expression generated according to configured rules and used in question content or expected answers. |
Advanced logic and Algorithm Mode
Advanced logic adds calculations and constraints to question generation. Algorithm Mode is the tool used to configure this logic.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Advanced logic | Rules, calculations, and constraints that control generated question content and the mathematical conditions it must satisfy. |
| Algorithm Mode | The tool used to define and apply advanced logic within a question. |
For how calculations and constraints control question generation, see Understanding Algorithm Mode in Nubric.
Quiz distribution
Quizzes can be shared with other users, assigned through a link or a supported teaching platform, or printed for use outside the online activity.
Sharing
Sharing makes quiz content available through a link or a Content Bank.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Shared link | Provides access to a shared quiz through a link. |
| Public Content Bank publication | Makes a quiz available in the Public Content Bank for the wider Nubric community. |
| Organization Content Bank publication | Makes a quiz available in the private Content Bank of a premium organization. |
For instructions on sharing links and publishing quizzes, see Share quizzes in Nubric.
Assigning
Assigning makes a quiz available as a student activity through an assignment link or a supported teaching platform.
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Assignment link | Provides a link that students use to access and complete an assigned quiz without a teaching platform integration. |
| Google Classroom | Connects Nubric quizzes with Google Classroom for assignment and grade synchronization. |
| LTI | Connects Nubric quiz activities with supported learning management systems for delivery and grade exchange. |
For assignment and grading behavior through teaching platforms, see How Nubric integrates with Google Classroom and How Nubric integrates with LTI.
A shared link provides access to quiz content. An assignment link provides access to a quiz as a student activity.
Printing
Printing produces a document that can be used independently of an online quiz activity.
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Print to PDF | Generates a printable PDF version of a quiz and its answer key. |
| Answer key | The correct answers provided with a printable quiz. |
For further details, see Print quizzes in Nubric.
Notes
- Changing the statement does not automatically update the expected answers or evaluation options.
- A mathematically equivalent response may be rejected if it does not meet the configured Answer settings.
- In dynamic questions, statements and expected answers must reference the corresponding generated values and expressions.
- Sharing a quiz does not create an assignment in a teaching platform.
- Printed quizzes are completed outside Nubric and do not use its automatic online evaluation.
