Configure a Multiple Choice question in Nubric

                      Reading time: 3min

Use the Multiple Choice question interface in Nubric to create and configure questions that require students to select one answer from a list of predefined options. Define the question content, configure the answer options, and specify how student selections are graded.

You can use this interface for conceptual checks, quick calculations, quizzes, and large classroom assessments where a limited set of answers is expected. It provides immediate automatic grading, supports partially correct answers, and allows you to provide feedback for each answer option.

                      Before you begin

                      Requirements

                      • An existing quiz in Nubric where you can add or edit a Multiple Choice question.

For a sequence of worked examples, follow the tutorials in the Build from scratch: guided tutorials folder.

                      Steps

                      Review the question interface

In a Multiple Choice question, students select one answer from the options you define. The interface includes the following components:

                      • Question title: identifies the question in the quiz.
                      • Question statement: describes the exercise students must solve.
                      • Answer options: the list of responses students can select.
                      • Grading configuration: defines the level of correctness and score weight for each answer.
                      • Custom feedback: optional feedback associated with each answer option.
                      • Question settings: additional options controlling question behavior, such as random variables.
                      • General feedback: optional feedback for all answers, regardless of their correctness.
Multiple Choice question editor displaying the main sections used to configure the question.

                      Define the question content

                      1. Enter the question title to identify the question in the quiz.
                      2. Write the exercise in the question statement.

The statement editor supports formatted text and mathematical expressions using MathType.

To provide feedback for all answers, regardless of their correctness, write it in the General feedback field. This feedback is displayed after answering.

General feedback field for feedback displayed to all students.

                      Define the answer options

In the Answers section, define the responses students can select. Add the answer options needed to represent the possible responses to the question.

                      For each answer, configure:

                      • The answer text or mathematical expression.
                      • The level of correctness: correct, partially correct, or incorrect.
                      • The score weight associated with that answer.
                      • Optional custom feedback.

The order of the answers in the editor does not necessarily correspond to the order students see. Answer order can be randomized for each student by enabling the option Sort answers randomly.

                      Configure grading

Assign a score weight to each answer option according to its level of correctness. You can give partial credit to answers that demonstrate some understanding of the problem.

For example, you could configure the following score weights:

                      Answer Score
                      Correct answer 100%
                      Partially correct answer 50%
                      Incorrect answer 0%

Unlike Open Answer questions, Multiple Choice questions do not require mathematical comparison of the student's response. Nubric checks which option the student selected and applies the grading configured for that option.

                      Provide answer-specific feedback

To explain why an answer is correct or help students understand a mistake, enter custom feedback for the corresponding answer option.

This feedback appears after the student selects an answer and submits the question. For example:

                      • Correct answer: "Great job! You correctly simplified the fraction."
                      • Incorrect answer: "Check your fraction addition again."
Answer options with custom feedback for correct and incorrect responses.

                      Configure question settings

Use the question settings to configure additional parameters that affect how the question behaves during quiz attempts. These include:

                      • Random variables used to generate multiple versions of a question.
                      • Constants and functions used in calculations.
                      • Allowed mathematical constructions.
                      • Formatting rules.

These settings allow you to create questions with dynamic or randomized problem statements.

Advanced options panel for configuring question behavior and randomization.

                      Define random variables

To generate multiple variations of the question automatically, it is possible to define random variables.

Instead of presenting the same values to every student, Nubric can generate new numbers or expressions each time the question appears. You can define:

                      • Random numbers within a range.
                      • Random expressions based on other variables.
                      • Algorithmic generation of values.

Random variables can be used in both the question statement and the answer options, allowing students to practise with different versions of the exercise.

                      Random variables configuration dialog.

                      Preview and test the question

Before publishing or assigning the question, use Preview question to simulate how it appears to students.

                      • View the question and answer options as students will see them.
                      • Select and submit answers to test how grading and feedback behave.
                      • Generate different versions of the question if it uses random variables.
Preview of a Multiple Choice question before publishing or assigning it.

Use Regenerate question multiple times to check that the randomized values behave as expected.

                      Verify it worked

                      In the preview, check that:

                      • The question statement and answer options appear as intended.
                      • Each selected answer receives the configured level of correctness and score weight.
                      • Partially correct answers receive the intended partial credit.
                      • General and answer-specific feedback appear as intended.
                      • Regenerating the question produces valid statements and answer options when random variables are used.

These checks help confirm that the question content and grading behave as expected before the question is used in a quiz.

                      Options and variations

                      Use Algorithm Mode

Use Algorithm Mode to apply advanced logic when the question requires conditions, constraints, or relationships between generated values. Advanced logic defines the rules, and Algorithm Mode is the tool used to implement them in the question.

For an explanation of these concepts and how they are applied, see Understanding Algorithm Mode in Nubric.

                      Common errors

Multiple Choice questions cannot use random values

Random variables can be used to generate dynamic question statements and answer options. Define them in the random variables configuration and test the resulting variations in the preview.

Only one answer option can receive credit

Although students select one answer, you can assign partial credit to multiple answer options. Configure each option's level of correctness and score weight to reflect the understanding it demonstrates.
