Symbol Bar

The Symbol bar can be displayed in two different formats depending on the context in which MathType is used.

The default toolbar provides access to the full set of symbols and tabs available in the editor. The simple toolbar offers a reduced selection of symbols, designed especially for students or learning environments, where having fewer buttons can make the editing experience simpler, clearer, and more comfortable.

Default Bar

This format displays the complete Symbol bar, giving users access to all available tabs, symbols, and structures in MathType. It is designed to provide the full editing experience, allowing users to build mathematical expressions with different levels of complexity directly from the interface.

The Symbol bar is organized into thematic tabs that group symbols by type or function. When users select a tab, they can access the elements available within that category and insert them directly into the equation.

Recommended users

This format is recommended for users who need access to a wide range of mathematical symbols and structures, such as teachers, content authors, advanced users, or people who frequently create complex expressions.

It is also suitable for contexts where users need to explore the full capabilities of the editor or work with different mathematical areas within the same editing experience.

Simple Bar

This format displays a simplified version of the Symbol bar, with a reduced set of symbols and structures. It keeps the main editing actions available while removing some of the more advanced or less frequently used options, making the interface easier to understand and navigate.

The simplified format is designed to reduce visual complexity and help users focus on the most common mathematical structures.

Recommended users

This format is especially recommended for students or learning environments where users may not need the full range of MathType symbols and structures. By limiting the number of visible options, the editor becomes less overwhelming and easier to use.

It can also be useful in contexts where the goal is to guide users toward a specific set of mathematical expressions or avoid unnecessary complexity during the authoring process.

Included symbols

This format includes a reduced set of commonly used symbols, operators, and structures. The exact selection may depend on the configuration, but it is intended to cover the most frequent needs for writing standard mathematical expressions.

• Basic structures: fractions, superscripts, subscripts, roots, and percentages.
• Operators and relations: common operators and comparison symbols.
• Fences: predefined structures for grouping expressions, such as parentheses, brackets, or absolute values.
• Matrices: predefined matrix layouts available as fixed options.
• Constants and number sets: common constants and number set symbols, such as π, e, or ℕ.
• Notation elements: accents, primes, overlines, and similar notation.

Some groups include a dropdown button that gives access to a small set of related additional symbols, while keeping the main toolbar compact and easy to scan.
