                      What is the new MathType

Create and edit your formulas in a visual environment

MathType remains a WYSIWYG equation editor, preserving both the classic interface and handwriting input modes to ensure an intuitive formula creation experience. While the interface has been modernized, the core functionality remains familiar to users of previous versions. An extensive library of mathematical symbols, organized into thematic tabs, allows users to easily build equations for a wide range of content types.

In this release, the new MathType is available exclusively through the Microsoft Add-in Marketplace, offering seamless integration with Microsoft Word.

The new version maintains the same structure as MathType for Office Tools, with internal updates and enhanced performance. Licensing is still URL-based — no product key required — for compatibility with cloud environments. By default, the editor connects to our latest production services, though users can opt to switch to the stable client version if needed.

Where can the new MathType be used?
The new editor can only be used as a Microsoft Word add-in on Windows.

                      MathType components

The new MathType still comprises two main components:

                      Editor

The core editor interface, responsible for displaying and rendering the current formula. It processes mouse and keyboard interactions to construct mathematical expressions dynamically.

                      Services

These services enhance the editor’s capabilities, such as generating image from MathML, use the handwriting tool, etc.

                      Introduction to creating equations

MathType allows you to create and edit mathematical and scientific content, including mathematics, physics, and general science. The editor provides a structured and intuitive interface for building equations with ease. Future updates will introduce additional options for handling a wider range of symbols and icons.

MathType offers two equation editing modes to suit different preferences and workflows:

                      • Classic Edition Area – This mode provides a familiar equation editor experience. Inside of it, you can find a tabbed toolbar that provides quick access to a broad set of symbols and templates.
                      • Handwritten Input Mode – Allows users to write equations using natural handwriting. After previewing the equation, it can be inserted directly or switched to Classic Input Mode for further refinement.

Once you have completed your equation, click Insert to apply changes or Cancel to exit without saving.

                      Edition area

The new MathType features an editing area with a classic view for building equations and managing elements. Font customisation options are available at the top of the editor's window. Just below, a tabbed toolbar provides quick access to a wide range of symbols.

By default, the new MathType opens in the icon-based interface, providing a structured way to build equations. However, users can switch to handwriting mode at any time. If you're using a touch-enabled laptop, you will soon be able to configure your preferred default input.

                      Editor's Floating Toolbar

Use the Editor's Floating Toolbar, located at the bottom right of the canvas. The Floating Toolbar provides essential editing controls. It contains the following options:

                      • Undo and Redo – Quickly revert or reapply changes.
                      • Trash – Clear the entire writing area.
                      • Recognition Toggle – Enable handwriting recognition.

                      Handwriting area

In handwriting mode, users can draw equations freely within the canvas. MathType has been trained to understand human strokes and will interpret them as editable math expressions. To switch to handwriting mode, use the Recognition Toggle in the Floating Toolbar.

Switching to Handwriting mode will reset the customization options.
Using the “undo” keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Z / Cmd + Z) will bring the selected options back.

                      Handwriting Floating Toolbar

Switching between input methods is easy—simply use the Floating Toolbar, located at the bottom right of the canvas.

The Floating Toolbar for the handwriting tool provides essential editing controls. It contains the following options:

                      • Undo and Redo – Quickly revert or reapply changes.
                      • Pen Tool – Activate input pen.
                      • Eraser – Remove unwanted strokes.
                      • Trash – Clear the entire writing area.
                      • Recognition Toggle – Disable handwriting recognition.

For more detailed instructions and examples, visit our Handwritten input page.

                      Caution!
The scribbling functionality described in Handwritten input page is not available.

                      Accessibility

We recognize the importance of math accessibility, and MathType ensures that mathematical content is readable for all users. The editor generates textual representations of formulas and includes various accessibility features to enhance the user experience for individuals with disabilities.
