                      • MathType for Microsoft 365

Try the new MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365

                      Reading time: 2min

Try the new MathType experience in Microsoft Word to access the latest editor design, performance improvements, and handwriting recognition while it is in early access.

Participation is optional, and you can switch back to the current MathType experience at any time.

                      The new MathType Add-in interface

                      About the new MathType

The new MathType is currently available in early access and introduces several improvements to the equation editing experience:

                      • A fresh and modern design: A cleaner and more intuitive interface.
                      • Better performance: Faster and smoother interactions when editing and inserting equations.
                      • Improved handwriting recognition: More accurate and responsive conversion of handwritten input into equations.

The new MathType is being made available gradually. If you do not see the option to try it yet, it may not have been enabled for you.

Access to the new MathType is included with your existing MathType subscription at no additional cost. The current MathType experience remains available and supported during the early access period.

                      Before you begin

                      Requirements

                      • MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365 is installed. See Install MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365.
                      • MathType is activated with an existing MathType subscription. See Activate MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365.
                      • The new MathType early access option is now available to you.

                      Equation compatibility

Equations created with the new MathType are compatible with the current MathType experience.

When you open an existing equation with the new MathType, the editor detects whether the equation is compatible. If the equation requires functionality that is not yet supported by the new MathType, you are automatically redirected to the current MathType experience.

This allows you to try the new editor without losing access to equations that require the current MathType.

                      Steps

Step 1: Switch to the new MathType

You can access the new MathType from the MathType Add-in tab or from the add-in interface, depending on the version available to you.

                      From the MathType Add-in tab

                      1. Open Microsoft Word.
                      2. Open the MathType Add-in tab.
                      3. Select Test MathType Beta.
                      4. Select Try the new version now.
                      5. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate the new editor.
Try out the New MathType through Word's Ribbon

                      From the MathType Add-in interface

                      1. Open the MathType Add-in in Microsoft Word.
                      2. Select the toggle for the new MathType experience.
                      3. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate the new editor.
                      Try out the new MathType

Once enabled, MathType uses the new editor when working with compatible equations.

Step 2: Switch back to the current MathType

You can return to the current MathType experience at any time.

                      1. Open the MathType Add-in.
                      2. Open the add-in settings.
                      3. Select the option to return to the current MathType experience.

The current MathType editor becomes your active editing experience again. Switching back does not affect equations you created with the new MathType.

                      Verify it worked

To verify that the new MathType is enabled:

                      1. Open MathType in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
                      2. Confirm that the new MathType interface opens.
                      3. Create or edit a compatible equation.

If you see the new interface and can use the editor, the new MathType experience is enabled.

                      Common errors

I don't see the option to try the new MathType

The new MathType is being released gradually during the early access period. If the switch or Test MathType Beta option does not appear, early access may not have been enabled for you yet. You can continue using the current MathType experience in the meantime.

An equation opens in the current MathType instead of the new MathType

The new MathType detects equations that use functionality that is not yet compatible with the early access editor. When this happens, MathType automatically opens the equation using the current MathType experience so that you can continue working with it.
