Create your first quiz with Nubric
Reading time: 2minCreate your first math quiz with Nubric by following a worked example on adding fractions. You will create an open-answer question, configure how answers are evaluated, introduce random variables, and add more questions with AI.

Follow the steps
Follow along with the video to build your own quiz. You can use the same fractions example or adapt it to a topic you teach.
Step 1 — Create your quiz
- On the My Quizzes page, click Start under Build from scratch.
- Use the pencil icon next to the quiz title to give it a name. The video uses Sum of fractions.
Step 2 — Add your first question
- Name the first question and keep Open Answer as the question type.
- Write the instructions in Question statement. Use MathType to insert the mathematical expression.
- Under Answers, enter the correct answer.
- Add General Feedback to explain the method students can use to solve the question.
Step 3 — Check how answers are evaluated
- Use Preview question to enter an answer and click Submit to check the result.
- Under Evaluation options, click Edit to adjust the answer requirements. In the video, selecting Simplified makes an unsimplified fraction count as incorrect.
- Click Save and close, then try another answer in the preview to check the updated behavior.
You can also assign different scores to different answers, giving students partial credit for a response that does not meet all the requirements. For a worked example, see Create partial scoring when units are missing.
Step 4 — Introduce random variables
- Click Add question to create a second open-answer question.
- Write a question statement using variables such as
#a,#b, and#nin place of fixed numbers. - Under Advanced options, open Question Settings and add your Random variables. Define the range and interval for each random number.
- Define a random expression for the solution, such as
#sol, and use it in the correct-answer field. - Save your changes. In Preview question, click Regenerate question to try different values and check the answers.
Step 5 — Add questions with AI
- Click Add question and choose AI generated to open the AI question generator.
- Choose the number of questions and the question type, then describe what you want in the Prompt field. The video generates three open-answer questions about adding fractions.
- Click Generate.
- Review the generated question statements, answers, and feedback. Edit them as needed and use the preview to check how each question works.
You now have a quiz with a manually created question, a question with random variables, and questions generated with AI. Use Test quiz to try the complete quiz before sharing it with your students.

To explore question creation and evaluation in more detail, continue with these written tutorials:
- Create an open-answer fraction addition question — Build a fraction addition question, define the correct answer, and test how mathematically equivalent answers are accepted.
- Require simplified answers in a fraction addition question — Configure the evaluation to require simplified fractions and check which answers are accepted.
- Create a randomized fraction addition question — Define random numbers and a solution expression to generate different fractions with a matching correct answer.
- Create partial scoring when units are missing — Extend a geometry question with an alternative answer that receives partial credit when units are missing, and add feedback explaining the reduced score.
