In this article, you'll open the generator, describe the questions you want to create, and generate them in your quiz. You'll also learn how to edit the results and what the AI can and cannot configure.
Before you begin
Requirements
- Access to Nubric and the AI question generator.
- An idea of the topic, student level, and question type you want to generate.
Applies to
Generating questions with AI when starting a new quiz or adding questions to an existing quiz in Nubric.
PRO users can make unlimited requests for AI-generated questions. Other Nubric plans may be subject to usage limits. For details about the availability of this feature, see Nubric plans and features.
Steps
Open the AI question generator
You can open the same generator in two ways:
- To start a new quiz: go to My Quizzes and select Generate with AI.
- To add questions to an existing quiz: open the quiz, select Add question, and then choose AI generated.
Describe the questions you want to generate
In the generator, specify:
- The number of questions to generate.
- The question type, such as open answer or multiple choice.
- A prompt describing the desired content.

Include the topic, student level, and any relevant constraints in your prompt. For example:
| Prompt | Create addition problems with fractions for middle school students. |
| Expected content | Fraction-addition questions with correct answers and general feedback explaining the solution process, such as finding a common denominator and adding the numerators. |
The prompt guides the content and structure of the generated questions. Clear, specific instructions help the AI produce results that match your goals.
For practical tips and examples to help you describe the questions you want to generate, see Writing effective prompts for AI question generation.
Generate the questions
Select Generate. Nubric creates the requested questions and adds them automatically to your quiz.
Each generated question includes:
- A question title.
- A question statement.
- A correct answer.
- General feedback explaining how to solve the problem.
- Basic answer settings, when applicable.
Generated questions are independent and do not share context. Generating new questions does not modify existing questions or their feedback.
Edit the generated content if needed
All generated content remains editable. You can change question titles and statements, adjust answers, and edit or delete feedback.
Reviewing AI-generated content before sharing the quiz is recommended to check its accuracy and suitability for your students.
Verify it worked
Check that the generated questions appear in your quiz. Open a question and confirm that it contains a title, statement, correct answer, and general feedback. Also, check that you have entered a title for the quiz.
Options and variations
Customize answers, feedback, and evaluation
The AI generates one correct answer per question. You can manually add other answers, including distractors for multiple-choice questions or alternative answers with partial grading.
You can also customize general feedback, add feedback for specific answers, and configure advanced evaluation options. Feedback explains the solution or provides guidance; it does not determine how students' answers are evaluated.
AI capabilities and limitations
What the AI does
- Generate question titles and statements.
- Define one correct answer per question.
- Generate general feedback explaining how to solve the problem.
- Generate feedback specific to the answer it creates.
- Apply basic answer settings, such as simplified, expanded, or factorized.
What the AI does not do
The question generator does not:
- Generate the quiz title.
- Configure the overall quiz structure or context.
- Define additional answers, such as distractors in multiple-choice questions or alternative answers with partial grading.
- Modify evaluation options beyond basic settings.
- Add random variables.
- Modify question settings.
- Evaluate the student's answer.
Common errors
The questions do not match your request
Check whether your prompt includes the topic, student level, and relevant constraints. Add any missing details when generating another set of questions, or edit the existing questions directly.
A generated answer or explanation is incorrect
AI-generated content may contain errors. Open the affected question and correct the statement, answer, or feedback as needed.
Additional answers or advanced settings are missing
The generator creates one correct answer per question and applies only basic answer settings. Add any additional answers and configure partial grading or advanced evaluation options manually.
