WirisQuizzes FAQs
Reading time: 3minFind answers to common questions about WirisQuizzes, including its features, question creation, installation options, system requirements, and integration with MathType.
General
What is the relationship between WirisQuizzes and MathType?
MathType is an integral part of WirisQuizzes. Teachers use MathType to create mathematical content in questions, while students use it to enter answers that require mathematical expressions.
The MathType toolbar in the WirisQuizzes student interface is designed to be simple and intuitive, requiring little or no prior experience. Users can also enter mathematical expressions through MathType's handwriting recognition feature instead of using the standard toolbar.
Licensing considerations
Using MathType independently with an LMS or another integration requires a separate license.
MathType for Office Tools is a separate product with its own license. It supports applications such as Microsoft Word and Apple Keynote, as well as other compatible software.
Does WirisQuizzes use Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
WirisQuizzes does not include AI-powered features of its own. However, it integrates MathType for creating mathematical content, which includes an optional Handwriting Assistant.
This feature uses non-generative AI-based recognition technology to convert handwritten mathematical expressions into editable equations, without generating new mathematical content.
Creating and using quizzes
How do I start creating a question?
To create your first question in WirisQuizzes, follow these steps:
- Select a question type that suits your assessment needs.
- Write the question statement and define the correct answer.
- Preview the question to check how it will appear to students, then save your changes.
- Assign a full grade and save the question.
For more detailed instructions and practical examples, see the Basic Guide to Question Creation with WirisQuizzes.
What types of questions can I create?
WirisQuizzes provides six question types for Moodle and LMS integrations via LTI, extending standard assessment capabilities with mathematical functionality. The most commonly used type is Short Answer, which supports different answer formats, including:
- Equations: Mathematical expressions and answers involving units.
- Text: Text-based responses.
- Plotters: Graphical and geometric responses.
- Statistical charts: Responses involving statistical visualizations.
For more information, see the WirisQuizzes Question Types and WirisQuizzes Answer Types documentation.
Can I create a quiz with randomized questions for each student?
Yes. WirisQuizzes allows you to randomize elements within individual questions, including coefficients, constants, graphics, and feedback. This makes it possible to generate different versions of the same question for different students or attempts. You have full control over the randomization process, which is powered by the integrated CalcMe calculation engine.
Additionally, your Learning Management System (LMS) may provide options to:
- Randomize the order of questions for each student.
- Randomize the question order for each attempt when multiple attempts are allowed.
Randomizing elements within questions is a WirisQuizzes feature, while randomizing the order of questions is managed by your LMS.
Is WirisQuizzes only suitable for advanced mathematics?
No. WirisQuizzes is suitable for a wide range of educational levels, from primary education to university, and for disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and engineering.
It can support students learning foundational topics such as fractions and functions, as well as those studying advanced subjects such as econometrics or physical chemistry. Its mathematical assessment capabilities can be adapted to different levels of complexity, making it useful for both younger students and adult learners.
Installation and deployment
Where can WirisQuizzes be installed?
WirisQuizzes supports several deployment options, depending on your learning environment and technical requirements.
Native Moodle integration
WirisQuizzes can be installed directly in Moodle, extending its existing assessment capabilities with additional mathematical question types. This option is designed for institutions using Moodle as their primary LMS.
LTI integration with other LMS platforms
WirisQuizzes can also be integrated using Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) with platforms such as:
- Canvas
- Blackboard
- D2L/Brightspace
- Schoology
- Other compatible LMS platforms
This integration requires an LMS that supports LTI 1.3 and connects to a Moodle backend hosted on Wiris servers. The configuration involves integration credentials and parameters, including a consumer key, shared secret, and launch URL.
Generic integration
WirisQuizzes can be deployed natively within your own technology environment through a generic integration. This option provides greater flexibility and control but requires additional implementation work and ongoing maintenance by your technical team.
System requirements
Which operating systems and browsers are supported?
WirisQuizzes is browser-based and works across operating systems using browsers that support JavaScript. Supported browsers include major options such as:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari
- Microsoft Edge
- Other JavaScript-compatible browsers may also work.
Do teachers need to install anything on their computers?
No. WirisQuizzes is browser-based, so teachers do not need to install additional software on their computers to create or manage questions.
Once WirisQuizzes has been integrated into the learning environment, teachers can access its features directly through their web browsers.
