Auxiliary input component for WirisQuizzes answers

It is common for teachers to ask their students to explain how they have computed the answer to a Math or Science question. Even in automatically graded questions, teachers may want to ask the students to write their reasons just in case they want to later check them for manually adjusting the grade or just to answer the student request regarding this question. It is also valuable from a formative assessment perspective, beyond grading.

Example

Consider the following question:

We may be interested in the reasoning the students have followed to answer it. We can enable the text editor by setting Display auxiliary text field in Input options > Answer input method.

Thus, an embedded text editor will appear after the answer field in order to avoid confusion. There, the students will be able to explain how they got the answer.

Sketch

If you want a drawing pad to allow the student to write and draw an explanation of how they have calculated the answer to a question, you can add Sketch to the auxiliary input editor. It adds a simple "Paint" like a program to the Atto editor. Features include simple shape tools, drawing, typing, colours, and undo/redo. The Sketch is a third-party Moodle plugin. If you want to use it, you must install and activate it because it is unavailable by default.

  1. Install the Sketch plugin for Moodle.

  2. Add the plugin to the Atto editor toolbar.
