Activate the MathType Add-on for Google Workspace

                      Reading time: 3min

Activate the MathType Add-On for Google Workspace to access MathType and ChemType after installing the Add-On.

You can start with a 30-day free trial or sign in to use an existing MathType subscription. Depending on how your MathType license is managed, you may also have access through a Community Subscription or a product key.

This article covers activation only. If you have not installed the add-in yet, see Install the MathType Add-on for Google Workspace.

                      Before you begin

                      Requirements

                      • The MathType Add-on for Google Workspace is installed.
                      • You can sign in to the Google account you want to use with MathType.
                      • You have your product key available if your license requires one.

When you use MathType without an active subscription, you can start a 30-day free trial. You do not need a subscription or product key to start the trial.

The trial is shared between MathType for Microsoft 365 and MathType for Google Workspace. Starting your trial in either product starts the same trial period for both.

After the trial expires, you need an active MathType subscription to create new equations or edit existing ones. Equations already inserted into your documents or presentations remain visible and printable.

If your institution or company provides MathType through a Community Subscription, use your institutional or company account when signing in.

                      Steps

                      Sign in to MathType

Use this method if you already have a MathType subscription associated with your account or want to start your free trial.

                      1. Open a document in Google Docs or a presentation in Google Slides.
                      2. Select Extensions > MathType.
                      3. Open the MathType editor from the task pane.
                      4. When prompted, select the Google account with which you want to use MathType.
                      5. Complete the Google sign-in process.
                      6. When the message "Login successful. Please close this screen to proceed" appears, close the sign-in window.

You can sign in with the same Google account currently open in Google Docs or Google Slides, or select a different Google account. If your account has an active subscription, MathType automatically detects it and grants you access to the corresponding license. If you do not have an active subscription, you can start the 30-day free trial.

Activate MathType with a Community Subscription

If your institution or company provides access to MathType through a Community Subscription:

                      1. Open MathType and start the sign-in process.
                      2. Select your institutional or company Google account.
                      3. Complete the Google sign-in process.

If your account or Google Workspace domain belongs to an organization with an active Community Subscription, MathType automatically provides access to the corresponding license. If you expect your organization to provide access, but MathType is not activated, contact your administrator or IT department to confirm that your account or domain is included in the subscription.

Activate MathType with a product key

If your MathType license is not associated with the Google account you use to sign in, you can activate MathType with a product key.

                      1. Open the MathType Add-On.
                      2. Sign in with the Google account you want to use with MathType.
                      3. When MathType asks you to activate the Add-On, select the option to enter a product key.
MathType activation prompt with a Product Key option.
                      4. Enter your MathType product key.
                      5. Follow the instructions displayed by MathType to complete the activation.
MathType dialog for entering a product key.

You can find your product key:

                      • In the email sent when the subscription was purchased.
                      • In My WIRIS Store.
                      • Through your administrator or IT department if the subscription is managed by your institution or company.

                      Verify it worked

To verify that MathType is activated:

                      1. Open MathType from Google Docs or Google Slides.
                      2. Confirm that you can open the MathType editor and create or edit an equation.

If you can use the editor without being asked to activate MathType, your license is active.

                      Common errors

My subscription is not detected after signing in

Make sure you signed in with the account associated with your MathType subscription.

                      • If you purchased MathType using a different Google account, sign out and sign in again with that account.
                      • If your institution or company provides MathType through a Community Subscription, make sure you are using your institutional or company account.

My account is not associated with a subscription

If MathType does not find an active subscription for your account, you can:

                      • Start the 30-day free trial, if available.
                      • Enter a valid product key, if you have one.
                      • Contact your institution or company if you expect to have access through a Community Subscription.

My product key is not accepted

Make sure you entered the correct product key and that the corresponding subscription is active. Copy the key again from your purchase confirmation email or My WIRIS Store. If your institution or company manages the subscription, contact your administrator or IT department.

The sign-in window does not open

Your browser may be blocking pop-up windows. Allow pop-ups for Google Docs or Google Slides and open MathType again.

                      The MathType editor appears empty

Your browser may be blocking third-party cookies required by the Add-on. Allow third-party cookies for MathType and reload the document or presentation.
