Install the MathType Add-on for Google Workspace

Install the MathType Add-on for Google Workspace to create and edit mathematical and chemical notation directly in Google Docs and Google Slides.

After completing this guide, MathType and ChemType will be installed and ready for activation.

Before you begin

Requirements

• A Google account.
• Permission to install Google Workspace Marketplace add-ons.
• A supported web browser that can run Google Docs or Google Slides.

Steps

Install MathType for your account

1. Open Google Docs or Google Slides.
2. Select Extensions > Add-ons > Get add-ons.
3. Search for MathType. Alternatively, open MathType in the Google Workspace Marketplace.
4. Select MathType and click Install.
5. When Google displays the permissions required by MathType, click Continue.
6. Select the Google account with which you want to use MathType.
7. Review the requested permissions and click Allow.
8. When the installation confirmation appears, click Done.

Deploy MathType to a Google Workspace organization

Google Workspace administrators can install MathType for all users or for selected organizational units.

1. Follow Google's instructions to install a Marketplace app for your organization.
2. Deploy MathType to the required users or organizational units.
3. Send an email to support@wiris.com.
4. In the email, provide:
   • The Google Workspace domain where MathType was deployed.
   • The MathType product key associated with the subscription.

WIRIS can then associate the Google Workspace domain with the corresponding MathType subscription.

Verify it worked

For an individual installation

1. Open Google Docs or Google Slides.
2. Confirm that MathType appears in the Extensions menu.

For an administrator deployment

1. Sign in with an account included in the deployment.
2. Confirm that MathType is available in Google Docs or Google Slides.

Uninstall MathType

You can uninstall MathType without removing equations already inserted into your documents or presentations.

Uninstall MathType from your account

1. Open Google Docs or Google Slides.
2. Select Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons.
3. Find MathType and select Options.
4. Select Uninstall.
5. Click Uninstall App to confirm.

You can also uninstall MathType from your installed Google Workspace Marketplace apps.

Remove MathType from a Google Workspace organization

If MathType was installed by a Google Workspace administrator, it must be removed through the Google Admin console. Follow Google's instructions for managing Marketplace applications and remove MathType from the affected users or organizational units.

Common errors

Authorization is required to perform that action

MathType may not have been granted all the permissions it requires during installation. Uninstall and reinstall the add-on, then review and accept all the requested permissions. If your organization prevents you from granting them, contact your Google Workspace administrator.

MathType does not appear in the Extensions menu

The installation may not have completed, or the document may need to be refreshed. Reload Google Docs or Google Slides and confirm that MathType appears among your installed Marketplace applications.

Unavailable for install

Your organization may restrict which Google Workspace Marketplace add-ons users can install. Contact your Google Workspace administrator. They may need to enable or install MathType on your account.

You cannot grant the requested permissions

Your organization may prevent users from authorizing add-ons. Ask your Google Workspace administrator to approve or deploy MathType.

You cannot uninstall MathType

The add-on may have been installed by an administrator. Ask your Google Workspace administrator to remove it through the Google Admin console.
