Understanding Google Classroom permissions and restrictions in LearningLemur

                        Reading time: 3min

LearningLemur integrates with Google Classroom to help teachers assign quizzes and manage student access. However, some features of this integration depend on permissions controlled by your institution's Google Workspace administrator.

Understanding these restrictions can help you identify why certain actions may not work as expected and what you can do in each situation.

                        What It Is

When using LearningLemur with Google Classroom, access and functionality depend on three layers:

                        1. Your Google account (teacher or student)
                        2. Your institution's Google Workspace settings
                        3. LearningLemur as a third-party application

Google Workspace administrators can restrict how third-party applications interact with their domain. These restrictions can affect:

                        • Signing in with Google (SSO)
                        • Connecting LearningLemur to Google Classroom
                        • Installing or using Google Classroom add-ons

As a result, some features may be unavailable even if LearningLemur is working correctly.

                        Why It Matters

If you encounter errors when signing in or connecting to Google Classroom, these are often caused by institutional restrictions rather than issues in LearningLemur. Understanding this helps you:

                        • Avoid confusion when features are blocked
                        • Identify whether the issue can be resolved on your own
                        • Know when to contact your Google Workspace administrator
                        • Choose alternative workflows when available

                        How It Works

When LearningLemur connects to Google Classroom, it requests permission to access specific Google services on your behalf. These permissions are managed by your institution through Google Workspace policies. Depending on how these policies are configured:

                        • Some users (e.g., teachers) may be allowed to use LearningLemur
                        • Others (e.g., students) may be restricted
                        • Some features (such as add-ons) may be entirely disabled

Because these controls are managed outside LearningLemur, the platform cannot override or bypass them.

                        Common Restriction Scenarios

                        SSO is blocked during sign-in

What happens: You try to sign in with Google, but the process fails or is blocked.

Why it happens: Your Google Workspace administrator has restricted third-party app access or limited which users can sign in with external tools. In some institutions:

                        • Teachers are allowed to use third-party apps
                        • Students are not

                        What you can do

                        • Try signing in with a different account (if available)
                        • Contact your Google Workspace administrator and ask whether LearningLemur is allowed
                        • Use a non-SSO login method if your institution supports it

You can sign in, but you cannot connect to Google Classroom

What happens: You can log in to LearningLemur, but connecting to Google Classroom (for example, when assigning a quiz) fails.

Why it happens: Your administrator may have restricted access to Google Classroom APIs or blocked third-party integrations from accessing Classroom data.

                        What you can do

                        • Contact your administrator to request access for LearningLemur
                        • If needed, use alternative workflows (such as sharing links manually or assigning outside of Google Classroom)

The LearningLemur add-on does not appear

What happens: You cannot find the LearningLemur add-on in Google Classroom or in the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Why it happens: This may be due to one of the following:

                        • Your institution's Google plan does not support Classroom add-ons
                        • Add-ons are disabled by your administrator
                        • Marketplace installations are restricted

                        What you can do

                        • Confirm whether your institution supports Google Classroom add-ons
                        • Contact your administrator to enable add-ons or allow installations
                        • Use the "assign from LearningLemur" workflow instead (without add-ons)

                        What You Can Do

                        If you are a teacher

                        You can:

                        • Contact your Google Workspace administrator and explain what you are trying to do
                        • Ask whether LearningLemur is approved as a third-party application
                        • Use alternative workflows when available (for example, assigning quizzes without the add-on)
                        • Try using a different account if your institution allows it

If you are a Google Workspace administrator

To enable LearningLemur for your users, you may need to:

                        • Allow third-party applications to access your domain
                        • Approve or whitelist LearningLemur in the Google Admin console
                        • Enable Google Classroom add-ons (if supported by your plan)
                        • Allow access to Google Classroom APIs for external applications

Refer to Google's official documentation for detailed steps on configuring these settings.

                        Common Misunderstandings

Misconception: This is a bug in LearningLemur

Clarification: Many access issues are caused by Google Workspace restrictions, not by LearningLemur errors.

Misconception: I can fix this from my account settings

Clarification: In most cases, these permissions are controlled at the institutional level and require administrator action.

Misconception: The add-on should always be available

Clarification: The add-on depends on both your Google plan and administrator configuration.
