                      MathType for Moodle settings reference

                      Reading time: 3min

The MathType settings page allows Moodle administrators to configure how MathType integrates with their Moodle site.

Most Moodle installations work correctly with the default configuration. Unless your institution has specific requirements, we recommend keeping the default values. The settings are grouped into categories according to the aspect of the integration they control.

                      Setting group Purpose
Editor settings Configure the availability and behavior of the MathType and ChemType editors.
Connection settings Configure the rendering service used by MathType.
Image settings Configure how mathematical expressions are rendered and displayed.
Window settings Configure the MathType editor window.
Security settings Restrict access to MathType services.

                      Editor settings

These settings control how MathType and ChemType are made available within Moodle editors.

                      Math editor

Displays the MathType button in supported Moodle text editors.

                      Default value

                      Enabled.

                      When to change it

Disable this option only if you want to prevent users from creating or editing mathematical expressions.

                      Chemistry editor

Displays the ChemType button in supported Moodle text editors.

                      Default value

                      Enabled.

                      When to change it

Disable this option if your institution does not require chemical notation.

                      Editor always active

Determines whether the MathType editor remains available even when the MathType filter has been disabled at the course or activity level. By default, if the MathType filter is disabled for a course or activity, the MathType editor is also unavailable within that context.

                      Default value

                      Disabled.

                      When to change it

Enable this option only if you want users to continue creating or editing equations even when the MathType filter has been disabled for a specific course or activity.

                      Connection settings

These settings define the rendering service used by MathType. Most Moodle installations use the default Cloud configuration and do not require any changes.

                      Service host

Specifies the hostname used when MathType connects to the rendering service.

                      Default value

                      www.wiris.net

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should keep the default value. Change this setting only if you have been instructed to use a different rendering endpoint as part of a custom deployment or by the WIRIS technical support team.

                      Service path

Specifies the path used to access the rendering service.

                      Default value

                      /demo/editor/render

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should keep the default value. Change this setting only if you have been instructed to use a different rendering endpoint as part of a custom deployment or by the WIRIS technical support team.

                      Service protocol

Specifies the protocol used to communicate with the rendering service.

                      Available values

                      • HTTP
                      • HTTPS

                      Default value

                      HTTPS

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should keep the default value. Change this setting only if you have been instructed to use a different rendering endpoint as part of a custom deployment or by the WIRIS technical support team.

                      Image settings

These settings control how mathematical expressions are rendered and displayed throughout Moodle. For most Moodle installations, the default configuration provides the best balance between compatibility, performance, and reliability.

                      Render type

Determines where mathematical expressions are rendered before being displayed to users.

                      Available values

                      • PHP: Equations are rendered by the MathType filter using the rendering service.
                      • Client: Equations are rendered directly in the user's browser using JavaScript.

                      Default value

                      PHP

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should use PHP rendering. Consider Client rendering only in high-concurrency environments where a large number of users need to display complex mathematical expressions simultaneously.

When using Client rendering, the Moodle Convert URLs into links and images filter must be disabled, as it is not compatible with this rendering mode. You can see more details about the render type options in Understanding MathType render types.

                      Image format

Specifies the image format used to display rendered mathematical expressions.

                      Available values

                      • SVG
                      • PNG

                      Default value

                      SVG

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should keep the default value. Use PNG only if SVG images are not supported by your environment or if compatibility with legacy systems is required.

                      Image performance mode

Enables an optimized response format that improves rendering performance by allowing responses to be cached. When enabled, MathType returns rendering information in JSON instead of a binary image, reducing the number of rendering requests.

                      Default value

                      Enabled

                      When to change it

Most Moodle installations should keep the default value. Disable this setting only for troubleshooting purposes or if instructed by the WIRIS technical support team.

                      Window settings

These settings control the behavior of the MathType editor window.

                      Modal window in full-screen mode

Determines whether the MathType editor opens in full-screen mode.

                      Default value

                      Disabled

                      When to change it

Enable this option if your users prefer working with a larger editing area or primarily use smaller displays.

                      Security settings

These settings control access to MathType services.

                      Access control

Restricts access to MathType services to authenticated Moodle users.

                      Default value

                      Disabled

                      When to change it

Enable this setting if you want to prevent unauthenticated users from accessing MathType services. This option is typically used in environments with specific security or access-control requirements.
