                      Configure MathType for Moodle

                      Reading time: 1min

Configure MathType for Moodle after installation to customize how equations are edited and rendered across your Moodle site.

After completing this guide, MathType will be ready for everyday use.

Most Moodle installations work correctly with the default configuration. Change the settings only if your institution has specific requirements.

                      Before you begin

                      Requirements

                      • MathType is installed.
                      • The MathType filter is enabled.
                      • You have Moodle administrator permissions.

                      Steps

                      Open the MathType settings

                      1. Go to Site administration → Plugins → Filters → Math & Science by WIRIS.
                      2. Review the available configuration options.

                      Review the recommended configuration

The default configuration is suitable for most Moodle installations. Before making MathType available to your users, we recommend reviewing the following settings.

                      Setting Recommended value Notes
Render type PHP Recommended for almost every installation. Client-side rendering should only be used in specific high-concurrency environments.
Chemistry editor Enabled Allows users to create and edit chemical notation using ChemType. Disable it only if your institution does not require chemistry support.
Hosting mode Cloud The default configuration. Change this only if your institution uses self-hosted Integration Services.

These recommendations are suitable for most Moodle installations. For a complete description of every available setting, including advanced configuration options, see MathType Moodle settings reference.

                      Configure the Chemistry editor

ChemType is enabled by default. If your institution does not require chemical notation, you can disable the Chemistry editor from the MathType settings page.

                      Save your changes

After modifying any settings, save the configuration. The new configuration is applied immediately.

                      Verify it worked

                      1. Open any Moodle page that contains a supported text editor.
                      2. Open MathType.
                      3. Create and insert a simple equation.
                      4. Save the content.
                      5. Confirm that the equation is displayed correctly.

If ChemType is enabled, verify that the Chemistry editor is also available.

For a complete validation of your installation, continue with Verify your MathType for Moodle installation.

Changes to the settings have no effect

                      After changing the configuration:

                      • Purge the browser caches.
                      • Refresh your browser.
                      • Verify that the settings were saved successfully.

The Chemistry editor is not available

Verify that the Chemistry editor option is enabled in the MathType settings.

                      Equations are not rendered correctly

Ensure that the MathType filter is enabled and that the rendering mode has not been modified unintentionally.
