MathType for Canvas: Overview
Reading time: 2min
MathType for Canvas is an equation editor integration that enables users to create and edit mathematical (and chemical) notation directly within the Canvas editor, improving how technical content is authored and shared.
What It Is
MathType for Canvas is an integration that brings the MathType equation editor into the Canvas learning management system, allowing users to type and handwrite mathematical notation directly within course content. The editor is embedded in the Canvas Rich Content Editor, where it can be used to insert and modify equations as part of standard content creation workflows.
MathType also includes ChemType, a variant specifically adapted for chemical notation. ChemType provides a customized toolbar and user experience tailored to working with chemical symbols and expressions. MathType and ChemType are separate Canvas integrations. While they follow the same installation and usage patterns, each must be installed independently.
MathType is available as a subscription that lets you enjoy the same high-quality solution in your LMS and word processors. Free usage is available under specific circumstances. If you are interested in purchasing, contact us by filling out this form or by emailing sales@wiris.com.
Why It Matters
Canvas does not natively provide a full-featured equation editor for mathematics or chemistry. MathType and ChemType address this limitation by enabling users to create structured mathematical and chemical notation directly within course content. This allows:
- Teachers to include equations in assignments, quizzes, and instructional materials
- Students to respond using proper mathematical notation
- Consistent formatting and editing of formulas within the Canvas editor
How It Works
MathType integrates into Canvas as an editor tool that can be accessed while creating or editing content.
Stage 1: Availability in Canvas
MathType is installed in Canvas and made available either at the course level or the account level, depending on configuration.
Stage 2: Access from the editor
Once available, users can open MathType (or ChemType) from the editor interface to create or edit equations.
Stage 3: Insertion and storage
When an equation is inserted, it becomes part of the Canvas content and behaves like other embedded elements. Users can later select the equation and reopen it in MathType to modify it.
Key Rules or Behaviours
- Equations are treated as standard Canvas content elements (they can be selected, edited, or removed).
- Editing an equation requires reopening it in the MathType editor.
- MathType and ChemType are separate integrations that provide different editing experiences. Both can be installed and used independently in Canvas.
Common Misunderstandings
Misconception: Installing MathType also installs ChemType
Clarification: MathType and ChemType must be installed separately, even though they follow the same setup process.
