Install MathType in Canvas (account-level)
Reading time: 1minWhen to use this: Install MathType at the account level to make it available across all courses without requiring teachers to enable it individually.
What you'll achieve: After completing this guide, MathType will be accessible from the editor toolbar in all courses within the Canvas account.
The same procedure applies to ChemType, which must be installed separately.
Before you begin
Requirements
- Canvas administrator permissions
- Access to the Canvas Admin panel
Steps
Open Admin and select your account
Access the Canvas administration panel and choose where MathType will be installed.
Go to Settings and open the Apps Center
Open the account configuration and manage external apps.
Search for MathType
Use the search bar to locate the app.

Add MathType as an App
Select MathType and click on Add App.

Optional: Add MathType to the editor toolbar (RCE)
To make MathType easier to access, you can add it directly to the Canvas Rich Content Editor toolbar. Go to View App configurations and enable it in the Add to RCE toolbar column.

Verify it worked
- Open any course and access the content editor.
- Confirm that MathType is available:
- In the Apps menu, or
- Directly in the editor toolbar (if enabled)

Options and variations
- If you need a course-level installation, teachers can enable MathType individually from Course Settings → Apps. You can find more details here
- If you also need chemical notation support, install ChemType by repeating the same steps and searching for "ChemType" in the App Center
Common errors
MathType is not found in the App Center
Ensure you are searching from the account-level Apps section (Admin → Settings → Apps).
MathType does not appear in the Rich Content Editor
Verify that the app was added successfully and, if needed, enabled in the RCE toolbar.
