Create your first equation with MathType Web
Reading time: 1minThis tutorial shows you how to open MathType Web, create a simple equation, insert it into your content, and edit it later.
By the end, you will have an equation inserted into your content that you can reopen and edit.

Before you begin
Requirements
- Access to an application with MathType Web available. Its toolbar and insertion button may look different from the examples below.
Step 1 — Open MathType
MathType opens from the application where you want to insert the equation.
- Place the cursor where you want the equation to appear.
- Find the MathType button in your application’s toolbar and click it.
- Wait for the MathType editor to open.

Step 2 — Create and insert an equation
A short equation lets you practice typing in MathType and see how it applies mathematical spacing.
- Type
x+yin the editing area. - Notice the spacing MathType adds around the plus sign.
- Click the button that inserts the equation into your application. Depending on the integration, it may be labeled Accept, OK, Insert, or something similar.

Checkpoint: You should see the equation in your application at the position you selected.
Step 3 — Edit the equation
Reopening an equation lets you change it without creating a new one.
- Select the equation you inserted.
- Click the MathType button to open the selected equation.
- Make a change, then click Accept, OK, or the equivalent button to save it.

Checkpoint: You should see the updated equation in your application.
You're done
You now have an equation that you can insert and edit with MathType Web. Next, you can:

Troubleshooting
If you cannot find the MathType button
Expand your application's toolbar and look for an equation button. Some integrations use a different icon.
If the equation appears in the wrong place
Place the cursor at the intended position in your application before opening MathType.
If a blank editor opens when you try to edit
Select the existing equation before clicking the MathType button.
