Get started with MathType in Moodle

By the end of this guide, you will have created, edited, and reused an equation directly within the Moodle editor.

Before you begin

Prerequisites

• Basic familiarity with editing content in Moodle.

Requirements

• MathType is installed and configured.
• Access to a supported Moodle text editor.

Steps

Step 1: Open the editor

Why: You need access to the Moodle editor to insert and manage equations.

1. Open any Moodle activity or resource that includes a supported text editor.
2. Edit or create content.
3. Locate the MathType button in the editor toolbar.

Step 2: Create an equation

1. Click the MathType button.

Why: Existing equations can be reopened and modified at any time.

4. Click Insert.

Step 5: Reuse an equation

Why: Reusing equations helps you create similar expressions more efficiently.

1. Select the equation.
2. Copy and paste it using your operating system's standard keyboard shortcuts.
3. Edit the copied equation if necessary.

Step 6: Create a chemical formula

Why: ChemType provides dedicated tools for writing chemical notation.

1. Open the ChemType editor.
2. Create a simple chemical formula.

Troubleshooting

The MathType button does not appear

Select the equation first, then reopen it using the MathType button.
