Verify your MathType for Moodle installation

Verify your MathType installation to confirm that equation editing and rendering work correctly across your Moodle site.

After completing this guide, you can be confident that MathType is ready for everyday use.

Before you begin

Requirements

• MathType is installed.
• The MathType filter is enabled.
• The appropriate editor plugin (TinyMCE and/or Atto) is installed.
• MathType has been configured.

Verification checklist

Complete the following checks to verify that your installation is working correctly.

Verify the editor integration

1. Open any Moodle page or activity that includes a supported text editor.
2. Confirm that the MathType button appears in the editor toolbar.
3. Open the editor.

The MathType editor should open without errors.

Verify equation editing

Create a simple equation, such asy2=z2.

1. Insert the equation into the editor.
2. Save the page.

The equation should be inserted successfully.

Verify equation rendering

After saving the page:

• The equation is displayed correctly.
• No raw MathML or LaTeX is visible.
• Reopening the equation launches the MathType editor.

Verify the diagnostic pages

Open the following diagnostic pages:

• {MOODLE_URL}/filter/wiris/info.php
• {MOODLE_URL}/filter/wiris/integration/test.php

Both pages should load successfully without reporting errors.

Verify it worked

Your installation is ready if:

• ✅ MathType appears in the editor toolbar.
• ✅ You can create and edit equations.
• ✅ Equations are rendered correctly after saving.
• ✅ Both diagnostic pages complete successfully.

Common errors

The MathType button does not appear

Verify that the appropriate editor plugin is installed and enabled for the editor used by your Moodle site.

Equations are displayed as raw MathML

Verify that the MathType filter is enabled and placed before Convert URLs into links and images in the Moodle filter list.

One of the diagnostic pages reports an error

The diagnostic pages identify problems with the MathType installation or configuration. Refer to MathType for Moodle test pages for guidance on interpreting the reported results.
