Install the MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365

Install MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365 to create and edit mathematical and chemical notation directly in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

After completing this guide, MathType and ChemType will be installed and ready for activation.

Before you begin

Requirements

Make sure you are using a supported version of Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.

Additional requirements apply to some environments:

• Word on Windows: Word 2019 and later require Word version 16.0.13628 or later. On Windows 10, version 1903 or later is required.
• Older Word builds on Windows: Word versions between 16.0.11629 and 16.0.13628 are not officially supported and may require Microsoft Edge WebView2 to run the MathType Add-in.
• iPad: If your device can install and run a supported version of Word or PowerPoint, there are no additional MathType-specific system requirements.

Steps

Install MathType in Word or PowerPoint

1. Open Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint.
2. Go to the Insert tab.
3. Depending on your Microsoft Office version, select Add-ins > Store or Get Add-ins.
4. Search for MathType in the Office Add-ins dialog.
5. Select the MathType Add-in to view its details.
6. Select Add to install it.

Once installed, MathType becomes available from the Microsoft Office interface. In Word desktop, a MathType Add-in tab also appears in the Ribbon. Installing the add-in makes both MathType and ChemType available.

Install MathType on iPad

After installing Microsoft Word or PowerPoint on your iPad:

1. Open Word or PowerPoint.
2. Go to the Insert tab.
3. Tap Add-ins.
4. Tap Office Add-ins.
5. Find MathType in the list of available add-ins.
6. Tap Add.

MathType will then appear in the list of installed add-ins.

Verify it worked

To verify that MathType was installed successfully:

1. Open Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
2. Locate MathType in the Ribbon or the installed add-ins.
3. Open the MathType task pane.
4. Confirm that the options to open MathType and ChemType are available.

At this point, the add-in is installed. You may be prompted to sign in when you open MathType for the first time.

Common errors

I can't install MathType from the Office Add-ins Store

Your organization may restrict users from installing add-ins from the Office Add-ins Store.

If MathType is available with a personal Microsoft account, but you cannot install it with your institutional or company account, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator. They may need to allow access to the Office Add-ins Store or deploy the MathType Add-in for you.

MathType does not load in Word on Windows

Some older Word builds may require Microsoft Edge WebView2 to run Office add-ins. This applies particularly to Word versions between 16.0.11629 and 16.0.13628, which are not officially supported.

Install Microsoft Edge WebView2 and restart Word before opening MathType again.

MathType does not appear after installation

Close and reopen Word or PowerPoint and check the installed add-ins again.

• In Word desktop, look for the MathType Add-in tab on the Ribbon or the MathType button in the Office interface.
• On iPad, open Insert > Add-ins and check that MathType appears in the list of installed add-ins.

MathType is installed, but doesn't load correctly

If MathType appears in your installed add-ins but does not load correctly, reload the add-in or clear the Office add-in cache.

On Windows

1. Click anywhere inside the MathType task pane.
2. Press Ctrl+F5 to reload the add-in.

Try reloading the add-in before clearing the Office cache.

On macOS

Office add-ins may be cached for performance. Reloading the add-in normally clears the cache, but this may not work reliably when multiple add-ins are present in the same document. To clear the cache manually:

1. Open the personality menu in the MathType task pane.
2. Select Clear Web Cache.
3. Reload MathType.

Uninstall MathType

You can remove the MathType Add-in directly from Microsoft Office. The steps depend on your operating system.

Windows

1. Open Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
2. In the Home tab, right-click the MathType icon.
3. Select Remove Add-in.

MathType is removed from Microsoft Office.

macOS

1. Open Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
2. In the Home tab, select Add-ins.
3. Select More Add-ins.
4. In the Office Add-ins window, select MY ADD-INS.
5. Locate MathType, open its options menu, and select Remove.

MathType is removed from Microsoft Office.
