                      Arabic notation features

                      Reading time: 1min

This article describes the Arabic-specific editing features available in MathType, including text direction controls, numeral selection, Arabic ligatures, and accessibility support.

                      Requirements/Prerequisites:

                      • MathType Web or a MathType integration.
                      • An Arabic locale configured in the browser, platform, or user profile.

                      Concepts:

                      • RTL: Right-to-left text and formula layout.
                      • Arabic-European numerals: Standard digits (1234...).
                      • Arabic-Indic numerals: Arabic numeral symbols (١٢٣٤...).
                      • Ligatures: Connected Arabic character combinations used in mathematical notation.

                      Reference details

MathType automatically detects the language being used from the browser, user profile, or platform settings. Each language is associated with a default text direction and numeral system.

Administrators can customize these defaults through the platform configuration, and users can influence them by changing their browser language settings.

                      Text direction controls

Users can manually switch the direction of mathematical expressions using the text direction controls available in the MathType toolbar.

                      mt_toolbar_arabic_numbers.png
                      Feature Description
Left-to-right (LTR) Displays formulas using standard left-to-right notation.
Right-to-left (RTL) Displays formulas using mirrored right-to-left notation.

                      Numeral system controls

Users can switch between supported numeral systems using the toolbar controls.

                      Numeral system Example
                      Arabic-European 1234
                      Arabic-Indic ١٢٣٤

                      Arabic ligatures

By default, MathType treats characters as individual mathematical variables. Certain common Arabic words automatically use ligatures.

Additional ligatures can be inserted manually using the Arabic ligature button available in the toolbar.

                      Feature Description
Automatic ligatures Applied to supported standard Arabic words.
Manual ligatures Inserted using the Arabic ligature toolbar button.

                      Accessibility support

MathType provides full accessibility support for Arabic mathematical notation.

                      Capability Supported
                      Accessible editor interface Yes
                      Arabic alternative text generation Yes
                      Screen reader compatibility Yes

Formulas created in Arabic include alternative text in Arabic, allowing assistive technologies to interpret and read mathematical content correctly.
