Auxiliary input component for Quizzes answers

It is common for teachers to ask their students to explain how they have computed the answer of a Math or Science question. Even in automatically graded questions, teachers may want to ask the students to write their reasons just in case they want to later check them for manually adjusting the grade or just to answer the student request regarding this question. It is also valuable from a formative assessment perspective, beyond grading.

Consider the following question:

We may be interested in the reasoning the students have followed to answer it. We can enable the text editor by setting Display auxiliary text field in Input options > Answer input method.

Thus, an embedded text editor will appear after the answer field in order to avoid confusion. There, the students will be able to explain how they got the answer.

If you want a drawing pad to allow the student to write and draw an explanation on how they have calculated the answer to a question, there is the option to add Sketch to the auxiliary input editor. It adds a simple "Paint" like program to the Atto editor. Features include simple shape tools, drawing, typing, colors, undo/redo. Sketch is a third-party Moodle plugin. If you want to use it, you must install and activate it because it is not available by default.
Below you will find the instructions.

Sketch installation and activation

1. Install the Sketch plugin for Moodle.
2. Add the plugin to the Atto editor toolbar.

3. Configure the Sketch plugin to store as image file by marking the checkbox in the plugin settings.
