Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Where can Wiris Quizzes be installed?

Wiris Quizzes has turnkey integrations for Canvas and Moodle. It is built as an LTI integration (see FAQ 3) for integration into Canvas. In Moodle it is a plugin a Moodle admin can install. Your IT staff should be able to integrate it into an LMS other than these 2 by using our public API.

How do I install Wiris Quizzes in a LMS?

For Moodle, your administrator can download and install the Wiris Quizzes plugin for Moodle. Similarly, if you are using Canvas, your Canvas admin can download and install Wiris Quizzes for Canvas.

If you are developing a learning application, you can check Wiris Quizzes generic where you will find the tools for integrating Wiris Quizzes into your system.

How does Wiris Quizzes integrate into my LMS?

Wiris Quizzes for Canvas uses LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) integration. Wiris Quizzes for Moodle provides new question types enhancing the already existing ones.

Can I install it on my own platform?

If you are developing a learning platform with a quiz system, you can integrate Wiris Quizzes to get the math & science features. You'll find technical documentation at Wiris Quizzes generic. Contact us for more information.

Must I write my own questions, or can I choose questions from a question bank?

One of the great features of Wiris Quizzes is that you can write your own questions to your own specifications, covering the exact material in your lessons. If you prefer though, you may choose questions from the STEM Collection. This collection of thousands of Wiris Quizzes questions comprises content contributed by schools and universities around the world. Most of our contributors are happy to share the content that is shared with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license. Some colleges and publishers prefer to let you use the content but not to share it. If you have created your own content for Wiris Quizzes and would like to share it with others by contributing to the STEM Collection, we’ve made it easy to do so. Email us at collection@wiris.com.

How do I start creating a question?

We have a Basic Guide to get you started, but the simple steps are to

  • select a question type
  • write the question and the correct answer
  • preview the question and save the changes
  • assign a full grade and save the question

Can I create a quiz that presents questions randomized for each student?

This is one of Wiris Quizzes’ strongest features. You can also choose to have Wiris Quizzes randomize coefficients, constants, graphics, and feedback in a question such that no two questions are alike, and no two quizzes are alike. Wiris Quizzes gives you complete control over this process. The calculation engine integrated in Wiris Quizzes is CalcMe.

Moreover, the order in which your questions are presented is (optionally) randomized for each student (an LMS feature, not Wiris Quizzes), and if you allow multiple attempts at the quiz, the order is randomized for each attempt by a student.

Is Wiris Quizzes only for advanced math? At what levels is it appropriate?

Wiris Quizzes can be used at literally all levels, and for mathematics and disciplines such as physics and engineering. It's entirely appropriate for teaching 10 year-olds, for teaching 17 year-olds, and for teaching adults. Wiris Quizzes is just as useful for teaching Econometrics or Physical Chemistry at the university level as it is teaching functions and fractions at the primary school level.

What kind of questions can I create?

Wiris Quizzes for Moodle and Canvas has 6 question types, which are described in more detail on the Question types page: Essay, Short Answer, Multiple Choice, Matching, True/False, and Cloze. The most commonly-used question type is Short Answer.

What is the relation between Wiris Quizzes and MathType?

The MathType editor is an integral part of Wiris Quizzes. You as a teacher will use MathType when creating the question, and your students will use MathType when answering questions that require mathematical input. The MathType toolbar in the Wiris Quizzes student interface is a simple one, requiring little to no learning curve. If you or your students prefer though, MathType also provides an interface whereby it will recognize handwritten input, thus obviating the need to learn a point & click interface.

If you need to use exclusively MathType in connection with an LMS or other integration, that is covered under a separate license.

MathType Office Tools is a separate product, purchased under a separate license, that can be used with a variety of software applications, websites, and web applications, but is most commonly used with word processing or presentation software such as Microsoft Word or Apple Keynote.

Does it work in every OS and browser?

Yes, as long as the browser is capable of handling JavaScript. Specifically, Wiris Quizzes works in all major browsers -- Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Edge, as well as others supporting JavaScript.

As a teacher, do I need to install something on my computer?

No. Wiris Quizzes is browser-based, so there’s nothing to install.

How different is Wiris Quizzes 4 from Wiris Quizzes' previous versions?

Wiris Quizzes 4 introduces a much more intuitive than in previous versions new user interface that, among others, incorporates the possibility of filtering the input and validation options based on the correct answer set using an advanced algorithm. Besides, the new graphical answer type will be also available. You can see the changes that the tool undergoes and its new features in its dedicated page.

When will Wiris Quizzes 4 be available?

Wiris Quizzes 4 is currently available for generic integration. You can find how to download it and a public demo here. On the other hand, if you are using or you want to use Wiris Quizzes in Moodle, you will have to wait until the end of 2020. There is no expected release date for LTI yet, so Canvas and Blackboard users will have to wait a little longer.

Is the update mandatory?

You have no obligation to update Wiris Quizzes to the latest version, you just won't be able to enjoy the new features and functionalities Wiris Quizzes 4 owns if you decide to maintain an old one.

What changes is the Wiris Quizzes Studio user interface experience?

The new Wiris Quizzes Studio is no longer divided into tabs. There is a home page where you must define the question’s correct answer and through which you can browse the following sections:

  • Input options: to choose the input method and the expected input by the student.
  • Validation options: to set the criteria for comparing the correct answer with the student’s one.
  • Define random variables and functions: to create a CalcMe algorithm defining random variables and functions.
  • Test this question: to simulate the question quickly and test the evaluation criteria, automatic feedback, and variables.

What changes will the questions creators notice?

Wiris Quizzes 4 places several options in different sections compared to previous versions. Don't worry about it, you can find the main changes in the input options and validation options section of the Wiris Quizzes 4 documentation page.

Furthermore, there is a new answer type that allows students to draw their answers and the system will validate it taking into account many different criteria. You can see more details here.

On the other hand, Wiris CAS is removed by default from the Studio and it's not possible to create a new Wiris CAS algorithm anymore. You can only use the old calculator if you have a question in your platform with a Wiris CAS algorithm.

What changes will my students notice?

Although Wiris Quizzes 4 presents a wide range of news, all of them are facing the best usability of the tool for teachers and students won't notice any change with the new version.

Will I have problems using questions created with previous versions?

No, you won't. All your old questions will work exactly as they used to do it in the previous versions. Furthermore, you will always have the choice to translate an old algorithm to CalcMe or keep it in its original format. Both options will allow you to change any part of the algorithm, but we strongly recommend you to start using CalcMe and enjoying all its features.
