MathType Toolbar/Menu has disappeared from Microsoft Word 2011

These steps do not apply to Office 2016/2019/365 (i.e., Office 15/16) for Mac!

MathType 6.7h and later for Mac

Word 2011 for Mac

This is a continuation of TechNote 133…

If you have not first read and followed the steps in that article, please go to TechNote 133 and go through the process described there.

Solution for Word 2011

Caution

If your version of Word is 15.xx or 16.xx, do not proceed! These steps will not work.

  1. Launch Microsoft Word.

  2. If the MathType menu is present in Word, but not the MathType toolbar, click to expand the View menu. In Toolbars, click to place a checkmark beside MathType If that works, you can skip the remaining steps. If that doesn't work, read on…

  3. Click to expand the Tools menu, then Templates and Add-ins.

  4. In the resulting window, under Global templates and add-ins, the following item(s) should be present and have a checkmark next to each:

  5. If the item(s) from step 4 are present and checked, click OK. If they're present but not checked, click to place a checkmark in the box, then click OK. The MathType toolbar and menu should now be present in Word.

  6. If the items from step 4 are not present, that's OK. Please try this:

    1. Click the Add button. This will open a window titled Choose a File.

    2. In the window, navigate to this folder:

      MathType 6:Office Support (for MathType 6.7h) MathType Support (for MathType 7 and later)

    3. If you are using MathType 6.7h, you will see the following items in the folder:

           MathType Commands.dot      wordcmds.dot

    4. Select (one of them at a time if using MathType 6.7h), and click Open. This will bring it into the Templates and Add-ins box. If using MathType 6.7h, you will then need to click Add one more time to bring in the other add-in (either MathType Commands.dot or wordcmds.dot).

    5. Once you have both of them listed under Templates and Add-ins, the boxes on the left side should have a checkmark inside, but if they don't, click to place a checkmark there.

    6. Click OK.

  7. This should restore the MathType toolbar & menu in Word. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load them in.
