Menu items

Each section can contain three types of items, in this order:
  • Big buttons, with an icon and a word: These are Actions.
  • Mathematical symbols, usually with little placeholder boxes.
  • Plain words: These are mathematical functions or programming commands, which usually require parameters. For example, think of sin(angle) or rank(matrix).

Below are brief descriptions of the Menu sections. Note that some buttons are repeated if they belong in more than one category. The full reference for all of the Menu functions can be found here.

Symbols Mathematical constants, operators and parentheses.
Arithmetic Operations and functions used in elementary integer arithmetic.
Polynomials Operations and functions that apply to polynomials.
Statistics Statistical functions. These apply to lists in WIRIS_calc, e.g. {1,4,7,7}.
Functions A list of common real functions. When applicable they can also accept and return complex values.
Calculus Derivatives, Integrals and Limits, as well as other miscellaneous functions.
Linear Algebra Vector and matrix input, and common operations in linear algebra.
Combinatorics Permutations, combinations, with/without repetition, etc.
Logic and sets Logical and set operators.
Solve Functions for solving equations.
Greek All lowercase and capital greek letters.
Units of measure All S.I. units and prefixes, and some useful tools for working with units.
Graphics Plot in 2D, 3D, or plot a region.
Programming Usual programming commands.
Format Insert and format a text-box, or insert an image.

UI Options

Options for General

Option Description Default
Constants Which symbols are recognized as mathematical constants (e.g. if i is enabled then i2 will be understood as -1). All selected
Functions Which function names are recognized by their usual meaning. (e.g. if exp/log is enabled then "ln(2)" will be understood and calculated as 0.6931... All selected
User Functions Define your own function names to add to the above list. They won't be calculated as anything, but sometimes this option is useful. See this page for an example: user functions Empty
List Allow lists as answers. Options for list separators are shown below. Selected
Lists always need curly brackets "{}" Require that lists be enclosed in curly brackets to be recognized as a list (e.g. if selected "4,7,88,9" would not be understood as a list - in fact it would be highlighted as syntactically incorrect). Selected
Intervals Recognizes interval notation as valid syntax. Expressions like [0,1] are already valid without this, but now we may have for instance ]0,1] or (0,1]. More details here. Unselected
Separators Decide which symbols act as decimal, digit, and list separators. Point "." : decimal digits
Comma "," : list items
Space " " : Nothing

RELEASE 1.5 JULY 2017

TL;DR

We've just about completed the integration of CALC in WIRIS QUIZZES, and most of the improvements in this release are aimed towards this. Soon we'll have a beta version to play with. In particular, we've ported the programming environment - a new menu tab with the programming constructs is now available. Also bugfixes as usual.

New Features

  • [CAS-872] - Enabled multiline environment for programing.
  • [CAS-874][CAS-946] - Instructions as while/ for / begin...end/ repeat loops added to CALC kernel.

Bugs & minor improvements resolved

  • [CAS-867] - Resolved issues regarding units of measure.
  • [CAS-912] - Resolved issues regarding some functions in different languages.
  • [CAS-924] - Functions from CAS work in this version with and without accents.
  • [CAS-928] - Language recognized as reserved word.
  • [CAS-932] - Identity matrix fixed in Spanish.
  • [CAS-939] - Resolved zoom issues and graph disappearing problems.
  • [CAS-944] - Resolved blinking icons for matrix.
  • [CAS-951] - Added begin...end loop in French and Portuguese.
  • [CAS-960] - Resolved lines in axis.
