# Features: MathType Desktop

## Publication-quality equations

You may be writing lab notes or lesson plans that no one will see but you. You may be writing textbooks or technical manuals that will be read by thousands. Either way, MathType is the only tool you'll need for great-looking math content any time, anywhere.

**Automatic spacing**that conforms to international mathematics typesetting conventions. Everything is spaced and sized in accordance with accepted typesetting standards.**The choice of publishers.**It's not unusual for publishers' submission guidelines to specify equations be authored with MathType.**Publisher workflow.**From authors to post-production staff, MathType is the only equation-editing tool you'll need to maintain consistency and quality at every step.

## Integration in Microsoft Word and other apps

MathType integrated with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Apple Pages is when it shines best because you can quickly add both the simplest and the most advanced equations and formulas into your documents. MathType works with hundreds of additional applications though (see next section), so it likely works with your favorites.

**Directly integrates**with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Apple applications (Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iBooks Author).**Equation Editor compatibility.**Edit all formulas created with Microsoft Equation 3.0, as well as Microsoft's OMML equation editor that was introduced with Word 2007.**MathType adds a tab into Word**'s ribbon with extra functionality (screen shot above).**Insert**inline and display equations from the tab on the ribbon in Word. Double-click to edit.**Auto numbering of formulas**if you so desire.**Insert references**to numbered equations in your text. Double-clicking one of these references takes you to that place in the document.**Type LaTeX directly**into a Word document.

## Compatibility with software and standards

Whether it's your favorite plotting software, computer algebra system, or word processor you'd like MathType to work with, chances are good MathType will work with it -- and others -- very nicely.

- MathType is the perfect match for
**Microsoft Office and the Apple applications**(see previous section). - MathType's use of
**object linking and embedding (OLE)**makes it possible to insert formulas into many other applications. **MathType works with over 800**software applications, web applications, and websites, making it the most usable equation editor available. No one uses anywhere close to 800 products of course, but the likelihood is high that MathType works with the few you do use.**Export and import MathML**, making it easy to integrate into many publishing workflows using XML.**LaTeX support**(see below).- Save or export
**equations as images**for applications that support only images.

## Productivity

No one intentionally sets out to waste time, but why settle for "good enough"? MathType makes it easy to get done what you need done, and move on to other work.

- Formula templates and symbols are available in a
**well-organized toolbar**. **Shortcuts**speed the insertion of symbols and templates using only the keyboard.- Like shortcuts?
**Create your own**! - Following the best good practices in math typesetting, MathType recognizes a
**defined set of functions**, the names of which are non-italicized by default. - If you're using a function not in MathType's pre-defined list, you can
**customize the list**, adding new functions to it and removing others if you want.

## Customization

MathType comes "out of the box" ready to go, and its default state is fine for many users. Even so, many other users prefer to "make MathType their own" with various customizations -- and why not? MathType makes it easy to do so.

**Drag your frequently-used formulas to the toolbar**to save them so you can reuse them quickly.**Customize the shortcuts**to align with how you use MathType.**Customize the styling**of the formulas: fonts, size, spacing.**Customize the output translators**to be compatible with other software and web applications.**Save your customizations**into preference files.- Easily
**switch from one set of customizations (preference files) to another**.

## Styling and fonts -- your choice

Unlike some equation editors that provide a very limited choice of fonts, MathType lets you choose the look you want. You can write equations with an appearance that's identical to the text of your document, or you can choose a font that makes the formulas stand out a bit. Fonts, sizes, colors, spacing, alignment of multiple lines, alignment of equations with surrounding text -- it's all under your control.

- Choose among a
**predefined list of styles**, making it easy to format expressions to align with accepted standards. **Multiple preference files.**With MathType, you can choose one look for one type of document and a different look for another document. MathType makes it easy to switch between styles with just a couple clicks.- Extensive control over the appearance and alignment of
**matrices and tables**. **Tweak MathType's settings**to conform to your own needs or style guide. Need upright lowercase Greek letters? Perhaps a bit more space before and after operator symbols? Make the changes and MathType will remember your new default settings.

## Complete coverage for all levels

If you're a third grade or KS1 teacher, MathType has you covered. If you're a PhD candidate, we've got what you need. If you're a professional engineer, you'll find the gamut of engineering mathematics in MathType. It's all there.

**From basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, engineering, and other advanced mathematics**, MathType covers it all.- Largest set of symbols:
**Greek, operators, relational symbols, stretchy arrows, and more.**

## Handwriting (Windows only)

If you prefer to write equations by hand rather than point & click or using shortcuts, MathType lets you do this by making use of the Math Input Panel that's a component of Windows 7 and later.

**Write formulas quickly,**by just tracing them like you were using paper and pencil.- Quickest way to input formulas in
**touchscreen computers**. - The handwriting feature is available only in Windows because it uses the
**Microsoft Math Input Panel**, available in Windows 7 and later.

## Easy installation

MathType is simple to install with just a couple of clicks. If you're using Microsoft Office or Apple Pages/Keynote/Numbers, MathType takes care of all the work integrating into these products. If you're a network administrator, you can install across the network.

**Easy to install**and uninstall.- Detects whether Microsoft Office is installed and if it is, automatically
**adds a tab to the ribbon in Word and PowerPoint**. - Network admins can install silently across their Windows network.

## Internationalization

Available in multiple languages, MathType can accept international keyboards as well.

- MathType for Windows is available in five languages:
**English, Chinese, French, German, and Japanese**. - Use
**any standard keyboard input method**to input non-latin based characters.

## Accessibility

MathType directly integrates with Word and Duxbury Braille Translator (DBT) to create documents with mathematical braille. Create talking books and documents that can be read aloud with accessible technology. If you need an expression read a certain way, you can (on Windows) enter Custom Speech Text that the screen reader will use instead of the normal text.

- Integrates with
**Duxbury Braille Translator**to create a math document in Microsoft Word and translate the document's text and math into braille. - Install
**MathPlayer together with the NVDA screen reader**and your MathType formulas inside Microsoft Word and PowerPoint will be accessible by those with visual impairment or certain learning disabilities. - MathPlayer associates a
**textual representation**to a formula and**allows navigating through a MathType formula**. **Publish to MathPage**in Word for Windows provides a great method for producing accessible materials and websites.- Enter
**Custom Speech Text**for expressions you'd like to be read a certain way (Windows only).

## LaTeX support

If you prefer LaTeX, you can type LaTeX directly into MathType or Word and convert to a built-up equation with a click or a keypress. Use MathType as a LaTeX front-end for LaTeX documents or web pages rendered with MathJax.

**Reuse existing formulas**from your [La]TeX documents.- To write purely LaTeX documents,
**use MathType as a WYSIWYG LaTeX front-end**. **Choose**between TeX, AMS TeX, LaTeX, and AMS LaTeX.- Within MathType, you can use a combination of point & click, keyboard shortcuts, and LaTeX formula entry.
**Write LaTeX directly in Word**and convert it to formulas.**Customize the translator**in case you need a specific subset of LaTeX or additional symbols that are not in the default translator.

## Image formats

Export the formulas to EPS to get the best possible quality integrated in third party software like Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. For less demanding scenarios like publishing into the Web and social media, the raster GIF format is the perfect choice. You can also export to the WMF format in Windows and PDF in Mac.

## 30-day trial

After installing MathType 7, you have a 30-day trial period with a fully functional product before you need to purchase. After the 30-day trial period, if you decide not to buy MathType, you will be still able to edit the formulas created in Microsoft Word using the Office built-in equation editor. To do that, you will need to use the post-trial MathType to convert to OMML (MS equation editor) format, and some advanced formulas might not be convertible.

## Software Development Kit

Publishers will benefit from an SDK that will allow you to extract the MathML (or LaTeX) from MathType formulas inside Microsoft Word documents. Use the same SDK to generate high quality images of the formulas in EPS, WMF (Windows), PDF (Mac), or the GIF raster format.
